The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS) began in Miri on the 5th of March 2006. In these early months, formation was conducted at member’s houses with a short fellowship after. In November 2012 and 2013, the eight pioneering members took their Definitive Promise and thus, the Miri chapter was officially established. After 9 years, permission was granted for the Miri chapter to be independent of the Kuching Community. The community adopted the patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Soon after, the bishop of Miri, Bishop Richard Ng granted his blessing for the community to be canonically established. The community was canonically established on the 19th of March 2022, on the solemnity of St Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
