Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face (1873–1897), born Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin in Alençon, Normandy, on 2 January 1873. She was the youngest daughter of a devout family of Saints Louis and Zelie Martin. From a young age, she desired to enter the Carmel of Lisieux, where her sisters Pauline and Marie had already become nuns. Though initially considered too young, Thérèse persevered and, during a pilgrimage to Rome in 1887, personally asked Pope Leo XIII for permission to enter Carmel at the age of fifteen. Her request was eventually granted, and she entered the Carmel of Lisieux on 9 April 1888, professing her vows the following year.
 

Within the cloister, Thérèse embraced a spirituality centred on complete trust in God’s merciful love. On 9 June 1895, the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, she offered herself as a “victim to Merciful Love.” Out of obedience, she began writing her autobiography, later known as Story of a Soul, which would become one of the most influential spiritual works in modern Christianity. Through it, she taught her “little way” of holiness: seeking sanctity not through extraordinary deeds, but through simple daily acts carried out with great love and total confidence in God.
 

Though afflicted with suffering, misunderstanding, and eventually tuberculosis, Thérèse remained steadfast in faith and joy. In 1897, while gravely ill, she completed her final manuscript and continued to encourage trust in God’s providence. She died on 30 September 1897 at the age of twenty-four, leaving behind the famous promise: “After my death, I will send a rain of roses.”
 

Pope Pius XI beatified her on 29 April 1923 and canonized her on 17 May 1925 before thousands gathered at Saint Peter’s Basilica. In 1927, she was proclaimed Universal Patroness of the Missions alongside Saint Francis Xavier. She was later declared a Doctor of the Church under the title “Doctor of the Science of Love” in 1997 by Pope Saint John Paul II. Her message of trust, love, and spiritual childhood continues to inspire people throughout the world.
