Saint John of the Cross (1542–1591) was born as Juan de Yepes in Fontiveros, Spain, in 1542, into a family marked by poverty and suffering. After his father, Gonzalo de Yepes, died when he was still very young, his mother, Catalina Alvarez, struggled to care for the family, moving from town to town in search of work. These early hardships shaped John’s compassion for the poor and the sick. As a youth, he studied under the Jesuits while serving the sick in a hospital, where his gentleness, intelligence, and spiritual depth became evident.

In 1563, he entered the Carmelite Order, attracted by its contemplative spirit and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. While studying theology at Salamanca, he sought a deeper life of prayer and considered joining the Carthusians. However, in 1567, his meeting with Saint Teresa of Jesus in Medina del Campo changed the course of his life. Inspired by her vision for reform, he joined the Discalced Carmelite movement and changed his name from John of Saint Matthias to John of the Cross.

John became renowned as a spiritual director, teacher, poet, and reformer. Despite enduring imprisonment, severe hardships, and misunderstandings, he responded with patience, charity, and deeper union with God. During his imprisonment in Toledo, he composed some of the greatest mystical poetry in Spanish literature, including parts of The Spiritual Canticle. His other writings, The Dark Night, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, and The Living Flame of Love later became classics of Christian spirituality. Known for his humility, love of prayer, compassion for the poor, and deep devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin.

On 13 December 1591 at Úbeda, Spain, John died of severe erysipelas as the midnight bells for Matins rang. He is famously remembered for saying: “I will say my Matins in heaven.” He was later canonised on 27 December 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII, declared a Doctor of the Church under the title “Mystical Doctor” in 1926 by Pope Pius XI, and proclaimed Patron Saint of Spanish poets in 1952.
